In this Student Enrichment Program, students will be guided through participation in the annual Mathematical Association of America’s official conference: MathFest. In addition to experiencing this 4-day conference, students will also receive the opportunity to visit and experience 3 major American cities: Philadelphia, Washington, and New York City. The program takes place over an 8-day whirlwind of excitement, learning, and adventure!

Program Goals

The MathFest Enrichment Program, like all TLUPS student enrichment programs, leads students through learning new skills and competencies through workshops and seminars, applying those skills in a real-world setting, and using that experience to reflect and grow intellectually and culturally.

The MathFest Enrichment Program distinguishes itself by being centred around one of the largest math conferences in the world! As a part of this program, students will receive full conference registration and individual schedules based on topics of interest. In addition, every city on this program will offer students the chance to tour its most prestigious university campuses and visit its most popular points of attraction.

Program Learning Outcomes

Learn the time-tested tactics of preparing for university applications

Gain access to seminars and workshops conducted by university prep coaches before, during and after the 7 day enrichment tour.

Enjoy guided campus tours of schools such as Harvard, MIT, UPenn, NYU and orientation sessions organized by admissions counselors.

Learn the time-tested tactics of preparing for university applications

Join in on lectures with leadership coaches, with interactive, hands-on learning opportunities.

Strengthen your courage and resolve to lead through leadership workshops during the enrichment tour.

Cultivate the theory and applications of research methodology and design

Gain access to a 4-week crash course in fundamental research skills prior to attended enrichment tour.

After successful completion of the MathFest enrichment program, gain an invitation to the official TLUPS student research team.

Explore the academic culture in America

In addition to the math conference, students will have the chance to visit 3 major cities in the United States, including the university campuses of Harvard University, MIT University, NYU, UPenn and more to learn about their application processes and admissions standards. We will also visit some famous cultural tourist attractions in each of our 3 stops.

Training Workshops and Seminars

On top of conference experience and visiting campuses and famous landmarks, students will also get the opportunity to participate in the suite of enrichment seminars and lectures that make up our ‘core curriculum’, with lessons on a broad range of topics, from problem solving to leadership.

Conference Description

MathFest is the annual conference held by the Mathematical Association of America, the world’s largest community of mathematicians, students, and enthusiasts.

It will be held in Philadelphia, and is a conference that draws mathematicians from all over the world to celebrate mathematics and build connections. This annual summertime meeting features numerous sessions devoted to all aspects of math and the latest in research, with seminars and lectures conducted for all student age ranges and knowledge levels.

This year includes keynote speeches from professors and researchers from institutions such as the University of Carnegie Mellon, the University of San Diego, and NASA.

Application:

Step 1: Application and Selection

Click the Sign up button above to sign up, selecting the MathFest 2021 program (among any other programs of interest) on the form.

Step 2: Qualification Evaluation

Within five working days after the application is received, TLUPS staff will contact the student who signed up, evaluate the qualification or arrange a telephone interview.

Step 3: Confirmation

After passing the qualification evaluation, the student can register officially for the program.

Step 4: Preparation

TLUPS will provide access to online workshops and training sessions for students to learn key learning outcomes in advance.

Step 5: Enjoy the program!

According to the agreed upon itinerary, TLUPS will provide final instructions for the meeting time and place in New York City, to start your adventure!

Certificate:

All the participants will be awarded certificates of “MAA MathFest 2021 Participation” which are approved by TLUPS and MAA-IPG. All additional certificates earned through enrichment workshops (such as Red Cross Training) will be awarded as well.
